Azimuth circle ranging

Apr. 15, 2024 I want to consult

The basic principle of using the azimuth circle to measure the distance between targets is to use the cosine theorem of the triangle to calculate the distance between the two targets based on the radius of the azimuth circle, the azimuth angles of the two targets and the angle between the two targets.

The specific steps are as follows:

Place the azimuth circle on a stable surface and adjust the pointer to point due north, recorded as 0°.

Sight the first target, such as a ship, and read the scale on the azimuth circle, recorded as A°.

Sight a second target, such as a lighthouse, and read the scale on the azimuth circle, recording it as B°.

Calculate the angle between the two targets and record it as C°, that is, C°=|A°-B°|.

According to the radius of the azimuth circle, recorded as r, and using the cosine theorem, the distance between the two targets is calculated, recorded as d, that is, d=2r*cos(C°/2).

For example, if the radius of the azimuth circle is 1 meter, the azimuth angle of the ship is 30°, and the azimuth angle of the lighthouse is 60°, then the angle between the two targets is 30° and the distance between the two targets is 1.732 meters.
